The road to addiction recovery is a winding one, with many twists and turns along the way. One of the most important things to keep in your recovery toolbox while on this journey is the power of inspiration and self-encouragement. There will be days where you won’t feel your best, but it’s crucial to keep moving forward the best way you know how. Maintaining a high level of inspiration during these times is the key to finding inner peace and maintaining your sobriety day after day. Finding your personal inspiration in recovery is easier than you may think, some of the best sources may already be around you.

Nature

When living in a big city, it’s easy to become disconnected from nature and the healing aspects it holds. Luckily, even if you live in the concrete jungle, nature is never too far away, especially simple pleasures like the sunrise or sunset. During your drug use, you probably never paid much attention to the inspirational feeling of waking up as the sun rises, symbolizing the start of a new day that will bring forth new ideas, experiences, and positivity. Enjoy the sunrise with a cup of tea or coffee and use it as a time to collect your thoughts about the coming day. You may find this to be an inspiring ritual that will set you off on the right foot every day. Just as with the sunrise, the sunset is a great way to round off your day, reflect on your daily achievements and garner some positive reinforcement for having gone another day successfully sober.

Reading

The internet is a vast resource with endless inspirational material from biographies to poetry and more. Lose yourself in other people’s stories about their addiction, recovery, and personal path in life. You may find this to be an inspirational way to motivate yourself to keep looking for new ways to grow as a person during this new sober path in your life. Learning about other people’s struggles and successes can help you feel like you’re not alone in what you’re feeling. The best part about reading is that it doesn’t have to cost you much at all, with books at the library and free publications online, you will always have something new to enjoy and absorb encouragement from.

Journaling

Keeping a journal can be incredibly healing and a great way to continue to inspire yourself on a daily basis. You don’t have to be an award-winning writer or poet to find the value in writing down your thoughts. This journal can be kept personal or something that you may want to keep and share later on in life with your friends and loved ones. A journal is also great for reflecting on previous difficulties and how you overcame them. Celebrating your journey will keep you in good spirits and motivate you to continue working on your recovery and bettering your mental and physical health.

Connecting

When entering recovery, you often have to do some social housekeeping to make sure that you are not inviting negative people and potential triggers into your newly sober life. Joining volunteer efforts can make an positive impact on your life when in recovery and continue to push you to better yourself and the world around you every day. “Paying it forward” by doing good deeds can also help make gloomy days feel a bit better since you know you are taking an active part in making the world a better place. Traveling

At one time, your addiction was your main priority and it took time away from pursuing other things in life. Now that you aren’t spending your time and money on substance misuse, you can save up to travel the world and see new and exciting places. Exploring other landscapes, cultures, and climates can be an inspiring experience. Many people return from trips to feeling recharged and reinvigorated, which is particularly significant when you are in recovery. There is so much to gain from seeing the world, and inspiration from your travels can make a lasting motivating impact on your sober journey.

It’s vital to continue to look for new inspiration while in recovery in order to build the self-encouragement needed to embark on a new sober journey in life. Having a strong support system is one of the main life-lines while in recovery, but finding inspiration to support and embolden yourself is just as essential. Building confidence and a feeling of balance can be the defining traits to overcoming some of the curveballs that may be thrown your way while living day to day. Continue to seek out inspiration from everyday things that will ward away self-doubt and negativity. These inspirational ideas will aid you in your creation of ambitious goals, and the ability to reflect on them while continuing to grow.
