7 Things to Do in the Summer to Help Recovery

by General Marketing

Whether you’re newly sober or far along in your recovery journey, it’s possible and fulfilling to spend summer days and nights happily sober. Although the summer months have been traditionally viewed as synonymous with alcohol or parties, they can also present prime opportunities to deepen your recovery.

Drug Addiction Recovery Activities for Summer

There are several summer activities to do in addiction recovery to improve your well-being, explore new opportunities and strengthen relationships. Here are our top seven sober activities for summer nights:

1. Volunteer

Volunteering can come in a myriad of forms, such as cleaning out the garage for an elderly neighbor, offering to mow lawns or spending time at your town’s local animal shelter.

2. Get Creative

Whether its attending poetry workshops, taking pottery classes or learning a new instrument, summer is the ideal time to get in touch with your creative side.

3. Clear the Clutter

Summer is also the perfect time to free your mind — and the closet — from clutter. Clean out your garage, give old clothes away and make room for new hobbies and activities.

4. Visit Sand Dunes, Forest Preserves or Arboretums

Depending on the weather and your geographical location, many natural places and activities are available. Try some outdoor activities the entire family will enjoy — hiking, canoeing, hammocking, biking, camping, backpacking or picnicking.

5. Develop a New Hobby

We’ve all heard that engaging in a healthy new hobby can expand the mind. It can also help you grow your social network and meet new people. Try a new cooking class, start a garden, learn how to fish or master a different language.

6. Cool Off

When you’re looking for summer activities to do in addiction recovery, you can’t go wrong with water. Lakes, rivers and water parks are all great places to adventure. Whether you want to relax by the pool, go rafting or tubing, or try night kayaking, you’re sure to enjoy the time spent cooling off and relaxing on or near bodies of water.

7. Catch a Meteor Shower

This summer, catch some astronomical events by laying outside on a warm summer night and looking at the stars. Catch the Southern Delta Aquariids meteor shower at the end of July and the mid-August Perseids meteor shower.
